2012 Center for Climate Sciences Summer School

The yearly summer school on "Using Satellite Observation to Advance Climate Models" is co- sponsored by NASA's Jet Propulusion Laboratory (JPL) and the California Institute of Technology Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS). The summer school is aimed at the next generation of climate scientists and brings together about 30 graduate students from around the world. While there, I had the opportunity to learn from and interact with experts on topics like climate model diagnostics and evaluation, radiative transfer, remote sensing, and inverse methods.

2011 Atmospheric Science Collaborations and Enriching NeTworks

The ASCENT workshop was organized by Dr. Gannet Hallar, Ms. Laura Edwards, Dr. Linnea Avallone and Dr. Heather Thirty. One goal of the workshop was to foster mentorships by bringing together junior and senior female scientists. The environment at the workshop encouraged frank conversations about maintaining a healthy work-life balance, effective communication and time management skills. Photo credit: Lourdes Figueroa

5th Graduate Climate Conference (GCC)

The annual GCC is organized specifically for graduate students, by graduate students. The 2011 conference was hosted by students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Program in Atmospheres, Oceans and Climate (MIT PAOC) and was held at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI). The conference brings together students who are involved in various areas of climate research including atmospheric, biological, earth and ocean sciences. The GCC enables students to engage in discussions with their peers about different aspects of climate research and to place their own research in the broader context of the climate science community.
