Atmos 5010 Lab III: Numerical Weather Prediction

Objectives:

Numerical Weather Prediction models are the backbone of operational, tactical, and commercial weather forecasting. The objectives of this lab are:
  • To gain an understanding of how NWP models work
  • To learn how to best apply high resolution models like the NAM (formerly the Eta) for weather forecasting
Complete the COMET/MetEd training module entitled How Mesoscale Models Work and answer the questions below.

Question 1:

When and where may the use of a mesoscale model prove beneficial?

Question 2:

What are parameterizations and why are they needed in numerical weather prediction models?

Question 3:

Why is it important to validate the synoptic (i.e., large scale) forecast when using mesoscale model output?

Question 4:

Why do forecast errors sometimes propagate through successive model forecasts?

Question 5:

What is the best way to use high resolution model guidance for weather forecasting?
