CHALICE Field Campaign (2019-2020)
The Complex Hydrometeor Aerial Locomotion and Image Capture Experiment (CHALICE) field campaign took place during Winter 2019-2020 in Red Butte Canyon at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our group conducted field experiments to pursue the development of a hotplate disdrometer that measures the real-time mass and density of individual hydrometeors. The Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera (MASC) captured images of snowflakes in real time to verify hydrometeor type.
The image to the left shows the weather tower we deployed and maintained in Red Butte Canyon, which housed the MASC, DEID, and various meteorological instrumentation.
MASC Snowflake Showcase
The Snowflake Showcase Live Feed , which I maintained during CHALICE, displays real-time, individual snowflakes in freefall. The Live Feed is down for the season, but still operates intermittently during other field research projects. Here are some highlights from the Snowflake Showcase during the CHALICE field campaign.
